Albergue to launch book on East Timor independence

East Timor's Independence, Indonesia and ASEAN - Professor Jean A. Berlie

Albergue SCM will be hosting a book launch ceremony on February 2 for a new work titled “East Timor’s Independence, Indonesia and ASEAN”. During the launch ceremony, book author and editor Professor Jean A. Berlie, a researcher at the Education University of Hong Kong, will share his views on the research topics that are discussed in his book.

Berlie’s book explores how history and cultural traditions have shaped Timorese politics, as well as the role that Indonesia and ASEAN (The Association of Southeast Asian Nations) play in the country’s future. It provides a glimpse of the complex political system through a perspective that takes into consideration the Portuguese colonization, Indonesian neo-colonialism and the United Nations missions.

The work also addresses broader issues such as the politics of modernization, development and youth education.

According to a note authored by Berlie, “the possibilities presented by the new president, Luo-Olo, as well as the upcoming parliamentary elections, make this project a timely contribution that confirms the vibrancy of East Timor’s democratic process and bi-party political system.”

Berlie is a researcher at the Education University of Hong Kong and a member and former vice-president of the Association of Research on Southeast Asia, Paris. He is also a member of the board of Tai Culture within SEACOM (Southeast Asia Communication Centre), Berlin. He teaches at Lingnan University, Hong Kong and Jinan University, Guangzhou: Institute of Southeast Asian Studies.

He has published several books and articles on Chinese and Southeast Asian politics and international relations, including a 2012 piece, titled “The Chinese of Macau a Decade after the Handover”.

The book launch ceremony will be conducted in English with free admission.

Ramos-Horta vai protestar por retrato de Timor-Leste em série norte-americana

Díli, 09 out (Lusa) - O ministro timorense José Ramos-Horta vai apresentar um protesto formal pelo retrato feito de Timor-Leste como um país controlado por um cartel de droga mexicano, no arranque da nova temporada da série de ficção norte-americana Madam Secretary.

Timor-Leste domina o enredo do episódio de arranque da quarta temporada da série de ficção política da CBS misturando factos reais - como a atual disputa sobre fronteiras marítimas com a Austrália - com erros (colocam essa disputa no Mar do Sul da China) e com um retrato "abusivo" do país.

"Isto só revela a cambada de ignorantes que prevalecem nos Estados Unidos quando Timor-Leste está bem longe da China, não tem sequer fronteira de qualquer espécie com a China", disse à Lusa o ministro de Estado, José Ramos-Horta.

"Vou ver com amigos dos Estados Unidos e gente de Hollywood para protestar contra isto. É uma difamação contra um país, que só mostra ignorância e racismo", afirmou.

O episódio arranca com a chegada da personagem principal, Elisabeth MCourt (interpretada pela atriz Tea Leoni), às Nações Unidas onde é interpelada pelo vice-ministro dos Negócios Estrangeiros timorense, Rogerio Bento (interpretado por Raúl Aranas) com quem a delegação norte-americana promete um contacto posterior.

Um assessor explica que a interpelação "deve ter que ver com a disputa de fronteiras marítimas entre Timor-Leste e a Austrália no Mar do Sul da China".

No episódio, Timor-Leste é caracterizado como um país controlado por um cartel mexicano de droga que usa o território como um centro de distribuição.

Os EUA acabam por recorrer à China para agir, ajudando a deter o líder do cartel de droga para evitar que "Timor-Leste se torne um narco-Estado".
